Observing the Husky Lounge
In the time that I was observing I saw...
Burger Studio: 27
Bagel Deli: 10
Salad Bar: 5
Drink station: fountain: 29 vs. bottled: 9
Milkshakes: 3
Extras (Candy, parfaits, cookies, etc.): 3
Indoor vs. outdoor dining: 34 vs. 8
Just coming to hang vs. coming to eat: 3 vs. 42
Bring your own food vs. buying food:4 girls vs. 38 others
Employees on break would go outside to have a cigarette and get a drink before they went.
Some kids came and hung out for longer than the hour that I was there, while others came, ate and left. Some just came and got food and took it with them.
This information suggests to me that public spots in colleges typically tend to be more for socializing than for anything else. At the Husky Lounge, kids came to sit around and talk to their friends while they ate. Students use places like these to get to know each other better and make friends.
